My research and teaching is in the history of modern Europe. After receiving my Ph.D. (Yale, 2005) I joined the faculty at Xavier University in Cincinnati. I've since then written two books on the civilian experience of war and its aftermath in France, including a forthcoming book on the 1870 siege of Strasbourg. My current favorite course to teach is A History of Saving the World (human rights, humanitarianism, environmentalism). I am starting a project to promote quantitative literacy in history higher education.
